Seeing Through the Eyes of The Open Book

Keep Your Eyes Open

Psalm 119:18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

The Courage to Open the Word of God

The passage "Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law" is a heartfelt prayer, a plea to the Lord to grant you insight and understanding. The phrase "open thou mine eyes" is an expression, desiring illumination not just with your physical eyes, but of the heart and spirit.

In this context, "open eyes" represents a deep desire for awareness, clarity, and understanding. It's an invitation to dig deeper than the ordinary and mundane, to see beyond the surface level of existence. When your eyes are open, you become receptive to the wonderful grace of the Lord. To ask for one's eyes to be opened is to confess inadequacy, to acknowledge that you stumble through life seeing only surfaces, missing the layers of meaning that lie within the word of God.

Why the Eyes Must Be Opened

  1. From Darkness to Light – The human condition begins in ignorance, symbolized by closed eyes. An opened eye pierces that veil, allowing the soul to step from not‑knowing into understanding.
  2. From Surface to Depth – Ordinary sight catches only what is on the surface. When your eyes are truly opened, they perceive layers of God’s meanings: the silent poetry of a sunrise, the hidden compassion in a stranger’s gesture, the elegant mathematics that knit the universe together.
  3. From Passive to Active – Vision is an invitation to engage. Once the eyes are opened, the observer is no longer a detached onlooker; they become a participant, co‑creating the wonder they witness.

Blind To God’s Word

Spiritual Cataracts: The "affairs of this life" and the cravings of the "flesh" act like a film over the soul’s lens. You can read the words on the page, but you cannot see the "wonders" behind them until the Spirit performs the surgery of grace.

The Shift in Perspective

The prayer is not "Change the Law," but "Change me." The Word is already perfect; the observer is the variable. Opening the eyes is the act of moving from a "consumer" of information to a "beholder" of glory.

Imagine the wondrous things that await you as you open your eyes to the word of God. Picture the awe-inspiring landscapes of spiritual truth, the profound mysteries and the deep, abiding peace that comes from understanding the law of the Lord. Embrace this journey with an open heart and mind, and let the wonders of the judgment of the Lord, the commandment of the Lord, the testimony of the Lord, the law of the Lord to illuminate your path, guiding you to a place of profound peace, understanding and spiritual truth.
