Beyond False Crowns: Why Jesus is Your Only True Head

The Verdict Above the Cross

Matthew 27:37 And set up over his head his accusation written, This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews

The Inscription Above Christ's Head

The physical placement of the accusation "over his head" carries profound theological significance. In the Roman crucifixion practice, the titulus (inscription board) was positioned at the highest point of the condemned person's body—directly above the head. This was not merely functional; it was deliberate public spectacle. The head, as the seat of identity, intellect, and authority, became the very location where Christ's supposed "crime" was announced to all who could see. Nevertheless, Pontus Pilate, boldly proclaims His kingship in a manner that contrasts sharply with the worldly powers that sought to suppress Him.

The Head as the Center of Identity

Your head is where your identity resides. When we speak of "heading" something, we mean leading it; when we speak of being the "head" of an organization, we mean having authority. In Christ's crucifixion, the inscription above His head declared to the watching world: This is who He is. This is what He represents. The placard didn't float in the air disconnected from His person—it crowned His head, making the statement inseparable from His very being. The head, then, becomes the locus where truth about identity is revealed or, in this case, where truth is mockingly distorted.

  • The Crown of Authority: To have a title placed over the head is to declare who—or what—holds authority over one’s thoughts and decisions. For many, the "accusations" written over their heads are the world's labels: Failure, Inadequate, Anxious, Defined by the past. We often let the noise of the crowd, the pressures of society, or the weight of our own shortcomings sit upon our mental brow, dictating our value.
  • The Alignment of Vision: The head is where the eyes are located; it is where we fix our gaze. When the inscription was placed above Jesus, it was not merely a sign; it was a focal point. It forced the world to look up, to shift their gaze toward his crown. Similarly, the spiritual life requires a recalibration of our mental landscape. Whatever we elevate above our head determines the direction of our feet.
  • The Supremacy of Truth: The irony of the cross is that while the world intended the sign as a mockery, it stood as the objective truth. It affirmed that the King of the Jews and indeed, the King of kings—was present, even in the depths of suffering. When we allow bible truth to reside above our own thoughts, we find a peace that surpasses the "accusations" of the world.

The Spiritual Implications

Recognizing Jesus as "The King" challenges us to reassess our understanding of leadership and power. While earthly kings may wield authority through force and coercion, Jesus exemplifies a different kind of kingship—one grounded in charity, sacrifice, and service. His rule calls us into a relationship that surpasses mere allegiance; it invites us to embrace His wisdom, guidance, and grace.

A Call to Spiritual Leadership

As you reflect on the accusation that hung over Him, consider the implications for your own life. Who or what has been set above your head, dictating your identity and direction? In a world filled with fleeting affirmations and shifting ideals, only one source can provide lasting truth and purpose.

The Crown In Conflict

If Jesus Christ is not the head or authority you have chosen to live under, then you are living under a false crown. You, the world whispers a thousand other names: success, comfort, validation, power, pleasure. Each one positions itself above your head, claiming authority over who you are and what you are meant to be. But only Jesus Christ, the King revealed in shame and vindicated in resurrection, has the authority to be your spiritual head. Without Him as your head, you are like a body wandering without direction, a kingdom without a king, a child without a name.

The decision is yours to make, because there is only one crown…
