A Citizen of Heaven Bound For Glory

The word “conversation” in the King James Version does not simply refer to speech or ordinary conversation as we understand it today. The Holy Ghost is saying that the believer's citizenship is in heaven. Although you live on earth, your true spiritual home is with Christ.

For Our Conversation Is in Heaven

Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

Pilgrim and Stranger With A Hope In Heaven

There is something deeply comforting about knowing where you belong. In a world where everything is temporary, where people change, circumstances shift, relationships sometimes fail, and earthly possessions eventually pass away, the child of God has a permanent citizenship that this world cannot take away. The Holy Ghost declares, “For our conversation is in heaven.” He is reminding believers that their true identity, spiritual allegiance, and ultimate hope are not rooted in this present world but in heaven, where Christ reigns.

The Paradox of Present Possession and Future Hope

To understand this passage fully, we must grasp the tension Paul is holding. Though we live physically on earth navigating its responsibilities, relationships, and limitations, our true citizenship is already established in heaven. This is not escapism; it is grounding. Because our citizenship is secured in heaven, our earthly struggles gain perspective. The provisional nature of this world no longer defines us or determines your ultimate worth.

The phrase reflects the already-not-yet reality of Christian faith. Already, through faith in Christ, we are seated with Him in the heavenly places. Not yet do we see Him face to face or dwell permanently in that realm. This creates a peculiar joy and patience we live as aliens and strangers on earth, citizens of heaven awaiting full entry.

"From Whence Also We Look for the Saviour"

Because our citizenship is heavenly, our primary focus is not on building an earthly kingdom, but on looking upward.

  • Eager Anticipation: The phrase "we look" describes an intense, expectant waiting straining the neck to catch the first sight of an arriving King. Believers do not passively drift through life; they actively watch for Christ’s return.
  • The Lord Jesus Christ: He does not come merely as a teacher or judge, but as the Saviour who will complete the work of redemption, transforming our mortal bodies to be like His glorious body.

Salvation: Are You Ready to Meet the Saviour?

The most personal question raised by Philippians 3:20 is not simply whether you believe that Jesus will return. It is whether you belong to Him.

The Holy Ghost calls Jesus “the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.” These words remind us that the One for whom Christians wait is the One who came to save sinners. The Christian hope of heaven is not based on the belief that human beings can earn their way into God's presence through good deeds, religious activity, moral respectability, or personal effort.

Salvation is God's gift of grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible makes clear that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own works. Your sin separates us from God, but Jesus Christ came into the world, died for our sins, and rose again. Through Him, forgiveness and reconciliation with God are offered to all who repent and believe in Him.

To be ready for Christ's return, therefore, is not merely to know the language of Christianity, attend church, or profess a belief in biblical prose. It is to place your trust in Jesus Christ Himself.

You must not confuse familiarity with the gospel with personally receiving its message.

You may know the hymns, understand the Scriptures, participate in religious services, and be respected by others, yet the essential question remains: Have you personally turned to Christ for salvation?

If you have not, the invitation of the gospel is still before you. Place your faith in the crucified and risen Lord Jesus, and call upon Him for salvation.

For the Saints

If you alreadybelong to Christ, let this passage strengthen your assurance and renew your commitment to live faithfully. Your confidence rests in His saving work, not in your ability to predict the future or maintain perfect strength. And as you wait for His appearing, remember that salvation includes a future hope: the completion of God's redemptive work, when Christ will translate His people and bring them into the fullness of the life He has promised. The Bible goes on to declare that He will change our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body. The Saviour who has redeemed you will not abandon His purpose for you.

That is why the believer can wait with patience, live with purpose, and face the future with hope.
