Persistence of Light in Darkness
John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
The Light as Divine Guidance
The light that shines in the opening words of John’s Gospel is no borrowed glow, no fragile flame vulnerable to the night. It is the eternal Light of God—self-existent, victorious, and ever present. “The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” Darkness neither welcomed nor understood Him; yet it could not overcome Him. The Light shines not because the world is ready, but because the Lord is faithful. It pierces the night by its very nature.
Recognition of Guidance
As with gladness men of old, Did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright, So, most gracious Lord, may we, Ever more be led to thee.
As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold", the joy and reverence for the light—symbolized by a guiding star. The star represents hope, wisdom and direction, leading people toward greater truths in the person of Jesus Christ.
Together, these passages underscore how light serves as a beacon to guide and uplift. The wise men of old felt a profound joy in the presence of a star, much like how you can find joy and purpose in following Jesus Christ; in salvation, discipleship and service.
Focusing on Light
- Light as Revelation: It reveals truth that darkness cannot conceal.
- Light as Direction: It points the way towards deliverance, turning chaos into focused purpose.
- Light as Joy: Encountering the light transforms fear into good cheer, prompting worship and great joy.
John declares that darkness could not comprehend the Light; the hymn responds with gladness that faith provides that understanding. Where darkness resists, the believing heart rejoices. Where night obscures, grace guides. The Lord does not abandon you to wander without direction. If you accept His Light today He has promised that He will leads you and guide you into all truth.
