Grafted In And Resting In The Root

Grafted Into The Olive Tree

Romans 11:16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.

The Firstfruit

In the imagery of firstfruits, we are taken back to ancient worship, where the earliest portion of a harvest was set apart and offered to God. This “firstfruit” was not merely symbolic; it was consecrated, belonging wholly to God, and therefore representing the sanctification of the whole harvest that followed. The logic if the first portion is holy, set apart, for service to God, then the entire “lump,” the whole mass that follows, is regarded in relation to that sanctified beginning.

If the firstfruit is holy, meaning the initial portion of the harvest is consecrated to God, then the entire lump is also holy. This applies to Christ Himself, who is the firstfruit of the resurrection. Because He is holy, sinless, undefiled and separate from sinners, those who are united with Him by his blood are also made holy. The firstfruit, then, represents the forerunner or the guarantee of what is to come. Just as the firstfruit ensured the blessing of the entire harvest, Christ’s resurrection ensures the future resurrection and sanctification of believers.

A Metaphor for Spiritual Heritage and Inclusion

"and if the root be holy, so are the branches." Here, is the spiritual foundation of salvation and doctrine. The branches represent the descendants of this root, whether they are natural branches (Israel) or wild branches the church.

Power To Save

You are not an isolated entity, drifting aimlessly in the void, but a branch grafted into a story far older and deeper than your own. Consider how easily you weary, trying to cultivate your own holiness or manufacture your own worth from the dry dust of your failures. Yet, there is a root, a foundation of absolute, abounding grace, that has already been declared holy on your behalf. Because that Root was set apart, you do not have to struggle to reach for a righteousness you cannot attain; you only need to accept by the faith the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross… Your salvation is not found in how high you can climb or how much fruit you can force your own brittle hands to produce; it is found in the quiet, desperate realization that you are tethered to the only source that can sustain you until death or until Jesus returns.

If you need help attempting to understand this idea of salvation please do not hesitate to leave a comment and someone will get back to you.

The Power of the Insignificant

The House of Bread

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Bethlehem, situated on a well-traveled trade route, felt the full weight of Rome’s expanding influence as merchants, families, and officials passed through its narrow paths. When Augustus issued his census decree, it was far more than a bureaucratic requirement—it marked the reach of a new imperial order that touched even the smallest Judean village. The census became a visible sign of Augustus’s power, Rome’s administrative stability, and the empire’s determination to organize and control its vast territories.

Bethlehem: Small Yet Significant

The prophet Micah emphasizes that Bethlehem is “little among the thousands of Judah.” It was a small, seemingly insignificant town. Yet God chooses it as the birthplace of the Messiah. This underscores a biblical principle: God often chooses what the world overlooks to accomplish His greatest purposes.

Proof That Great Things Come from Small Places

"Bethlehem is little among the thousands of Judah" (Micah 5:2) highlights the humble and seemingly insignificant status of Bethlehem, a small town in the region of Judah. However, despite its size, Bethlehem played a crucial role in history as the birthplace of King David and Jesus Christ.

Similarly, you may feel insignificant or "little" in the grand scheme of things, but their efforts and contributions can have a profound impact. Just as Bethlehem's small size belied its importance, you can make a significant difference in the world, you work, school, home.

The Lord’s Patience Towards Every Sinner

Psalm 51:13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

The Beauty of God’s Forgiveness

Throughout history, the Lord has shown immense patience, waiting for His people to turn from their wrongs and turn to Him. From the Israelites wandering in the desert to the story of the Prodigal Son, the Lord embodies an unwavering willingness to welcome every sinner.

The Need for Conversion

The Lord's patience with sinners underscores His merciful nature. The Lord continually reaches out, willing to forgive and restore. The Lord offers every sinner an opportunity to repent an opportunity to choose life. The Lord is long-suffering not willing that any should perish; redemption is available to you, regardless of your past actions.

"…and sinners shall be converted unto thee," emphasises the conversion or salvation of every sinner. The term "converted" implies a change of mind resulting in a change of heart: developing an aversion to sinful behaviour and a desire to walk aligned to biblical principles. This conversion is not just a superficial change but an internal transformation that creates a new creation in Christ Jesus impacting your thoughts, feelings, and actions.

  1. The Lord’s patience is transformative
  2. The Lord’s correction is your guidance
  3. Regeneration follows repentance

In every generation, the Lord’s patience stands as a testament to His abounding mercy and grace. His willingness to forgive and restore reveals a heart that longs for reconciliation. Just as He welcomed the prodigal son and guided the Israelites despite their failings, the Lord continues to call you and every sinner. Through the Lord’s patience and grace, every sinner is offered the hope of redemption and the opportunity to become a new creation in Christ.
