The Grace That Found a Dying Thief Still Reaches for You Today

Yesterday, Today, Forever: The Timeless Nature Of Grace

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

In a world where everything seems subject to change—governments rise and fall, cultures shift, relationships fluctuate, and human strength fades—this verse points to One whose character, purpose, truth, and love remain constant.

The Ever Present Christ

The phrase “to day” brings this truth into immediate reality. Faith is not sustained merely by memories of what Christ once did, nor solely by hopes of what He will do in the future. It rests upon what He is now. Christ is present with His people in every generation. Human circumstances change rapidly; one day may bring joy and another sorrow, one season abundance and another hardship. Yet Christ remains unchanged amid every fluctuation. His wisdom does not become outdated. His truth does not bend to the pressures of the age. His love does not grow cold. The same Savior who strengthened believers in times of persecution, uncertainty, and loss continues to sustain those who trust Him today.

Forever Vs. Time

The words “for ever” lift the reader’s gaze beyond time itself. Christ’s constancy is not limited to earthly history. He is eternally the same. His kingdom will not fade, His promises will not fail, and His glory will not diminish. Every human achievement eventually passes away, but Christ remains. The One who was faithful in ages past will be faithful throughout eternity. Believers therefore place their confidence not in temporary circumstances but in the everlasting Lord who reigns forever.

This unchangeableness does not imply inactivity. Christ is constantly at work, guiding, sanctifying, comforting, correcting, and redeeming. Yet all His actions flow from a character that never changes. His methods may vary according to His wisdom and providence, but His nature remains perfect and consistent. Because He is unchanging, His promises are trustworthy. Because He is unchanging, His mercy is dependable. Because He is unchanging, His people can rest securely in Him.

The Imputable Truth

The same grace that met the thief on the cross is extended to you in this very moment. You do not worship a memory or serve a principle; you encounter the living Christ who promises never to leave you or forsake you. His commitment to your redemption, your healing, your transformation is as fierce and unwavering today as it was two thousand years ago. In His preserved Word, you have found not merely a teacher or a moral exemplar, but the Author of your salvation, yesterday, today, and forever the same.

Alert, Alert…The Lord Is Coming Back

Behold I Come Quickly…

1 Thessalonians 5:1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

The Element of Surprise

The imagery of a thief in the night suggests unexpectedness. Just as a thief comes silently and without warning, the return of the Lord will catch many off guard. This element of surprise serves as a call to you to be vigilant and ready.

  • Awareness: You are encouraged to remain spiritually alert and avoid becoming complacent. The verse indicates that full awareness of the event is essential; however, the timing remains uncertain.
  • Readiness: It acts as a reminder to align your life and actions with biblical principles.

Practical implications for daily life

  1. Live consistently: Shape daily habits (prayer, fellowship, faithfulness) so your life coheres with the scriptures whether the return is near or distant.
  2. Avoid moral drift: Make concrete safeguards against complacency (accountability partners, regular self-examination).
  3. Invest in others: Prioritize relationships and witness—friends and family who may be unprepared; suddenness makes now the responsible time to act.
  4. Be wise stewards: Use time, talents, and resources for the Lord's purposes.

Finally, for those who belong to Christ, the thief imagery is an alert, not a threat. Paul clarifies that believers are “children of light,” not destined to be overtaken by darkness. The same sudden return that brings vindication, restoration, and joy to those waiting in faith will in the Lord’s time bring sorrow and woe. The Lord’s coming is not an end, but a fulfillment—the moment when faith becomes sight.

The Eternal Perspective of the Born Again Believer

New Life, New Direction, New Vision

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

The Resurrection Connection

"If ye then be risen with Christ," refers to more than a historical event of the empty tomb. It speaks to a spiritual resurrection, your acceptance and belief of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ- the believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection through faith. This means:

  • You have been spiritually reborn
  • You have died to your old self
  • Your identity is now in Christ

The apostle Paul is urging believers who have been “risen with Christ”—that is, Christ in you and you in Christ—to have a consistent view of eternity. As believers, we are no longer bound by our old sinful nature, but have been given new life in Christ.

Waiting in the Redemption of Our Bodies

While we await the full redemption of our bodies, we labour and patiently wait:

In summary, now that we are risen with Christ, we must be heavenly minded seeking heavenly things and wait expectantly for the day when our bodies share in His glory.

Christ In You...

Christ in you, the hope of glory

Colossians 1:26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

This concept is not just about Jesus being an external figure to be admired or an historical person to be studied. It means that Christ, the creator of the universe resides within you and every believer.

A New Creation: The indwelling of Christ transforms a person into a "new creature"

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The old self, governed by sin, is converted by a new life governed by Christ. Your salvation is not based on your own fluctuating performance, but on the unchangeable presence of Jesus Christ in you.

Security: This knowledge brings security because it means your salvation is not something that can be lost due to a failure or a moment of weakness. Your salvation is based on the perfect work of Jesus Christ guaranteed by his perfect book.

Confidence: This security fosters deep confidence. You can face trials, temptations, and uncertainties with the assurance that Christ is with you and for you.

Christ in you, what a thing...Now, how does one obtain this hope or this security?
