Potter Vs. Clay

Romans 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

Understanding the Role of the Potter and the Clay

Paul interrupts all human objections with a single humbling question:
Modern vernacular: Who are you?

Here Paul draws attention to the infinite distance between Creator and creature. The contrast is staggering:

  • The clay: it cannot move, or alter its shape on its own. It is entirely at the mercy of the potter, who can shape it into a vessel for honourable.
  • The Potter: The potter can press, pull, and fire the clay, determining its final form. This reflects God’s prerogative to assign different purposes and make what he wants for his glory.

The potter’s authority and freedom

  • Purposeful prerogative: The Potter’s freedom is not arbitrary chaos but purpose discretion: He assigns functions and focus according to his will.
  • Prerogative without counsel: The rhetorical question “who hath been his counsellor?” underlines that the Potter does not consult another to determine how to shape the clay. His wisdom and will suffice.
  • Prerogative and wisdom: The passage stresses authority, it also invites you and all others: finite creatures lack the perspective to critique the Lords choices. The Potter’s right to shape is coupled with access to comprehensive knowledge and his almighty power that the clay lacks.
These passages present a profound meditation on the inefficiency of the clay: you are represented as limited and dependent. The distinction of vessel molded by the Potter signifies the Lord purpose inherent in each individual. The passages emphasise the clay's complete dependence on the Potter and the Potter's absolute authority to shape it as he pleases.

How long will you continue to resist the Potter of your soul?

Standing Boldly in a Dark World

The Purpose of Light

Luke 8:16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.

Luke 11:33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.

Your Light Unveiled

God does not hide the light He gives. When He entrust you with a gift, a calling, or bible truth He intends for you to be visible and useful—set where others can see and be led to the Lord by it. Like a candle placed on a lampstand, a Christian illuminated by the Lord is meant to stand openly in the world against the dark, not be buried in fear, pride, or secrecy. This visibility serves two purposes: it dispels darkness around you and is a testimony to the light of the Lord inside you.

Practical implications:

God desires you to be placed in positions where you can maximize your potential and bring glory to Him. A candle's purpose is to illuminate and provide light to others, you have unique gifts and talents that are meant to be used for the Lord’s service.
