Work That Must Be Rejected

The Only Light That Shatters Darkness

Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Casting Off Darkness

The Urgency of the Present Moment

"The night is far spent, the day is at hand." These opening words carry profound urgency. The passage speaks not of some distant, theoretical future, but of now, a critical threshold where darkness is already receding and light is breaking through. This is not a gentle, gradual transition. The day is at hand close enough to touch, near enough to choose.

Understanding the Works of Darkness

What Darkness Truly Is

The "works of darkness" are not merely misdeeds or external failures. They represent the entire apparatus of spiritual wickedness and separation from God the patterns of living that flow from pride, from being alienated from Jesus Christ. These are your choices made in spiritual night: deception, envy, malice, pride, anger, bitterness, lust, greed, and all the internal corruption that finds expression in what you do and say.

We Must Cast Them Off

To “cast off the works of darkness” is more than simply trying to behave better. The imagery is that of removing filthy or unsuitable clothing. The “works of darkness” are the patterns, desires, attitudes, and actions that belong to a life lived apart from God, things that thrive in secrecy and are incompatible with the light of Jesus Christ. The Holy Ghost therefore calls you to deliberately take them off rather than make peace with them. Darkness is not something you are meant to decorate, manage, or carry with you into the day; it is something you are called to leave behind. You cannot put clean clothes over rags; you must actively renounce and abandon the old life. It requires an intentional act of the will to discard what belongs to the night before you can walk cleanly in the daylight.

Salvation and Peace with God

Here lies the deepest truth: you cannot genuinely put on the armour of light while you remain at odds with God.

The works of darkness cling to those who are spiritually separated from their Jesus Christ. You can attempt external reformation you can try to behave better, perform good deeds, clean up your life but without reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ, you remain fundamentally clothed in darkness. The armour won't fit. The light will not adhere to an unredeemed soul.

Salvation is the threshold. It is the moment when Christ's sacrifice closes the chasm between you and God. It is when you cease to be an enemy and become a friend. It is when peace deep, unshakeable peace replaces the restlessness of separation. Only then, standing in right relationship with God, saved by grace, can you genuinely shed the old life and step into the new

You cannot truly cast off the works of darkness merely by trying harder to become a better person. You need something deeper: you need to be saved. You need to be brought out of darkness and reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. Until you have peace with God, you may change your appearance, but you cannot change the deepest condition of your heart. If you have never accepted the forgiveness He offers through His death burial and resurrection, no exhortation to "put on the armor of light" will truly transform you. You will be rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship, trying to appear righteous while remaining spiritually enslaved.

Today is the day, now is the moment for salvation, accept his free gift of salvation today and become a child of light.

The Light of Calvary Revealed To You

The Radiant Promise of Light

Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The Gift of Light

To give light—this is the fundamental promise at the heart of redemption. Not merely to speak of hope, but to give illumination. To be light is to make visible what was hidden, to reveal truth where only shadows existed. When one sits in darkness; whether of ignorance, despair, sin, or grief—light doesn't reason with or negotiate. Light simply comes, in, the darkness has no choice but to yield.

"To Give Light"

The phrase "to give light" is not merely a poetic description; it is a clinical description of a rescue. To give light is to make "manifest” or simply to display or show.

  1. Revelation: This light doesn't just provide facts; it changes the environment. When light is "given," the hidden traps of the darkness are exposed, and the truth, previously invisible, suddenly is made plain.
  2. A Gift: The light is an act of pure grace, it is something that you did not earn. Those sitting in the shadow of death have nothing to trade. The light initiates the contact; the darkness does not summon the sun.
  3. The Source: This light is the "Dayspring from on high." It is resurrection dawn that doesn't rise from the earth's horizon but descends from heaven.

The Way of Peace

To guide your feet into the way of peace is the second movement. Light comes first to your eyes: Now you can see. Then comes the guidance to your feet—to help you walk. This is the progression of salvation: first illumination, then direction; first sight, then movement; first understanding that you are lost, then the path of righteousness.

The "way of peace" is not the absence of struggle. It is the assurance that your journey has a destination, that each step is meaningful, that you are not wandering aimlessly through the shadow but the rod and staff of your Saviour Jesus Christ is there to guide you. Peace settles in your heart when you know you are being guided.

The Light That Comes To You

You who sit in darkness today—you are the one this passage addresses. Perhaps your darkness is grief, perhaps it is the shadow of choices, or fear of what lies ahead, perhaps it is the despair of where you will spend eternity.

This ancient promise speaks: the light that came into the world comes to you through the completed work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Not as a distant theological concept, but as the one person that can penetrate the specific darkness of your specific situation and save your soul. That light is Jesus—the one who said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

The Divinity of the Word Made Flesh

 The Divinity of the Word

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

The passage begins by affirming the divinity of the Word: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). This verse establishes the eternal existence of the Word, who was present with God from the very beginning.

In a world where we often define individuals by their limitations, this passage reminds believers that God transcends all human understanding and confinement. The notion that the Word, representing divine wisdom and purpose, chooses to engage with humanity fundamentally highlights how God operates outside the realms of what we deem possible.

The Incarnation: God Dwelling Among Us

The statement "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" underlines the miraculous act of the Incarnation. This was not merely a transformation or physical alteration; it was an intentional and profound choice by God to enter human existence, fully embodying humanity while retaining His divine essence. This demonstrates that God can reach beyond the confines of the physical world to achieve His divine plan.

The implications of the Incarnation are staggering. It signifies God’s desire for relationship and connection with humanity, showcasing His love and commitment. Through Jesus Christ, God made the ultimate sacrifice by experiencing human life, suffering, and ultimately death. These actions reveal that God not only understands our struggles, but has actively participated in them, reinforcing the idea that nothing is impossible for Him.

John 1:1-14 serves as a cornerstone for understanding the divine nature of Christ and the limitless power of God. Through Jesus Christ and the miracle of God becoming man, believers are assured of God’s unwavering ability to fulfil His promises and perform the impossible—becoming human while remaining fully divine.

Jesus Christ vs. Halloween

The Maniac of Gadara and Halloween

Mark 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

The story of the Maniac of Gadara, found in the Gospels (Mark 5:1–15, Matthew 8:28–34, Luke 8:26–39 Jesus meets this man possessed by a legion of devils in the region of the Gadarenes/Gerasenes), the narrative of transformation and redemption through Jesus Christ is evident by the Maniacs humility. In stark contrast, Halloween, often associated with horror and darkness.

  • Background: The Maniac of Gadara, was a man possessed by numerous devils, also known as Legion. The Maniac lived among the tombs, where he mutilated himself and exhibited extreme supernatural behaviour.
  • Encounter with Jesus: Upon meeting Jesus, he fell at His feet, showing a recognition of Jesus’s authority. Jesus commanded the devils to leave the man, restoring him to sanity and sobriety.
  • Chaos vs. order: The devil embodies chaos, fragmentation, and destruction; Jesus brings order, healing, and restoration.
  • Isolation vs. fellowship: The possessed man lives among the tombs cut off from people; Jesus restores fellowship—he returns the man to consciousness and gives him a mission to testify.
  • Fear vs. peace: Demonic presence provokes terror and instability; Jesus imparts peace, calm, and security.
  • Destruction vs. life: Devils seek harm and death; Jesus gives life and purpose.
  • Power to harm vs. authority to heal: The demons exert coercive power; Jesus exercises authority that overcomes and liberates.
  • Superficial mimicry vs. authoritative deliverance: Halloween impersonates demonic or frightening figures for amusement; Jesus exercises authoritative power over actual evil and removes it.
  • Glamorizing darkness vs. dispelling darkness: Halloween often glamorizes or normalizes darkness and the grotesque; Jesus exposes darkness and brings healing light and spiritual renewal.

The Maniac of Gadara

Before the Maniac of Gadara's encounter with Jesus Christ, he exemplified everything nasty and despicable about Halloween--living among tombs, self-mutilation, resisting the only saviour that can help.  Jesus Christ's intervention, exemplifies hope, healing, and redemption. Jesus embodies restoration, forgiveness, and the victory of light over darkness. This stands in stark contrast to the spirit of Halloween, which embraces fear, darkness, and celebrates death.

The Light That Saves

When Darkness Meets Light

Acts 16:29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

The physical light the Jailer requests becomes a powerful symbol of the spiritual light of God’s word that transforms his life. His question, "What must I do to be saved?" demonstrates a heart that has exhausted every means and is ready for the light of truth

The jailer's question and Paul's response highlight how accessible salvation is. It is not confined to a specific group or class or race or gender or profession but is available to everyone…whosoever will.

The Simplicity of Salvation

The passage in Acts 16:29-31 encapsulates the simplicity of salvation in a few key points:

  1. Faith in Jesus Christ: Salvation is not achieved through good works, rituals, or personal efforts but through faith in Jesus Christ.
  2. Immediate and Certain: The promise of salvation is immediate and certain for you and all those who believe. There is no delay or uncertainty; belief in Jesus, death, burial and resurrection results in immediate salvation.

Belief Beyond Barriers

The passage shows that no elaborate creed, ritual, or moral checklist is required for biblical salvation. The only requirement is your belief in the word of God and Jesus Christ completed work on the cross. Once that belief is present, salvation is granted instantly.
